Strawberries belong to the genus Fragraria in the rose family along with a couple of other fruits in apples and plums. Its name actually derived from the Old Latin word for fragrant and the Italian word for strawberry is Fragola.
Despite having berry in its name, interestingly enough strawberries are not actually classified as a true berry by botanists. True berries like blueberries and cranberries have seeds inside. Strawberries on the other hand have dry, yellow “seeds” on the outside. On top of that, each of the “seeds” on the outside of the strawberry are considered a separate fruit.
On average, every strawberry consists of 200 tiny seeds. If you were to take all strawberries produced in California alone each year and were to lay them side by side, they would wrap around the world an immaculate 15 times. As a result, this is enough strawberries to provide every household in the United States with 12 pint baskets.
Because this fruit is so popular, many gardeners opt to grow them in their backyards. If you too desire to fill your garden with fresh strawberries, expect it to take 2 to 3 months to grow from the plant, and a little longer if you begin growing them by the seed. Just make sure to not eat them until they are fully red to truly enjoy the luscious flavor they have to offer.
